A lot of people seem to set themselves a New Years Resolution around this time of the year.  In fact, according to a survey, 2 in 3 people in Britain (66%) will set themselves a resolution for 2024.

The top 3 resolutions not surprisingly are to

lose weight

take care of their mental health

improve finances

However, when it comes to sticking to a resolution, statistics show that

8% stick with their goals for one month

22% last two months

22% last three months

3% last four months

leaving 45% who give up before they reach the 4 week mark!!

So why is it that so many people break their resolutions?  I can think of 4 reasons …….

❤️ Doing something new means ‘change’ and we (our brain) doesn’t like change.  Once our brain has learned a new habit it wants to keep that habit in place.  To change something we have to be commited to taking different actions consistently, until our brain learns the new habit that will serve us better.

As humans, we like to take the ‘path of least resistance’, so when ‘the going get’s tough’ and we ‘don’t feel like it’ we typically find a reason not to ‘do the thing’, then we justify our behaviour and afterwards beat ourselves up for not sticking to our word!

❤️ The change is too big and unrealistic.

❤️ We don’t want the change enough, and we need to want to change more than we want things to stay the same.

❤️ We don’t have a structure to keep the new behaviour in place or hold ourself accountable for the outcome.

I believe it’s useful to look at the longterm impact of keeping things the same, rather than a short term fix, because a short term fix will never really address the problem.  When we look at the bigger picture and see it as a lifestyle shift it’s much more powerful.  Then we can ask yourself questions like

Why do I want to lose weight/improve my mental health/improve my finances?

How will it feel when I’ve achieved what I want (specifically)?

What will I be able to do that I can’t do now?
